TEFL Course - Shanghai
Shanghai, a Dynamic City
With 23 million inhabitants, high-speed trains, and a higher level of development and urbanization than anywhere else in China, Shanghai is a dynamic city. The iconic, modern skyline of the Pudong district stands in stark contrast to the picturesque ancient marvels of sites like the City God Temple and Yuyuan garden. Visit the many museums that contain relics and artwork of national and historical importance, or take a walk along the Bund, where you can enjoy the rich architectural history of this ancient city, from Romanesque to Art Deco.
Training takes place at the chic Somekh building. The location offers stunning views of Shanghai's city skyline and Huangpu River, making it the ideal location for training in China's business capital. Art, culture and business collide in this unique location. Our boutique offices will provide a stunningly quaint location with easy access to Shanghai's world class transportation network in addition to thriving financial, business and shopping districts.
The 4 Week TEFL Course
You must complete the 40-hour online TEFL preparatory course at least one week before you arrive in China. This means you will have completed most of the grammar and theory modules before you arrive in Shanghai so that you can focus on the more practical aspects of the course while you’re here, such as teaching practice with students at a local school.
Our 4-week TEFL course is fully accredited and certified to meet international standards. The training involves up to 6 hours of observed teaching practice and 120 hours of classroom instruction. You will acquire the practical skills you will need to teach English as a foreign language in any country around the world.
Classes run Monday to Friday, 9-4pm. Weekends are free to explore the local area but you will have homework assignments.
Once you have confirmed your place on the TEFL course, you should book your accommodation close to the TEFL training location. Once your place has been confirmed on the TEFL course we can assist you with booking your accommodation. Alternatively, you can book a room for 1-2 nights on www.agoda.com and if you're happy with the hotel on arrival you can negotiate a long-stay rate.
Getting Here and Visas
We recommend you arrive in China at least 2 days prior to the course start date. Many people enter China on a tourist visa and then their prospective employer issues the work visa also known as the Alien Residence permit.
Prospects for Teachers
With the global language making a transition into the country’s daily life from the internet to the street signs, it has become a necessity for the Chinese to learn English. With middle class parents enrolling their children into private tuition classes, there are plenty of opportunities for TEFL qualified teachers to find a sizeable income. While most of the job opportunities are concentrated on highly urbanized areas such as Beijing and Shanghai, opportunities to teach in rural areas are opening up. The demand is however, much higher for native English speakers with degrees.
Being a country with such a massive population and eager reception to Western influence, there is an abundance of opportunities for those who seek employment in the form of teaching English. There is a high demand for those who possess the relevant qualifications to teach English in China. With the country’s massive list of tourist attractions in almost every city and the rich and vibrant culture, your employment period will hardly feel like work. Instead, it will be the perfect opening for you to show the results of a fulfilling employment in the midst of one of the most spectacular countries in the world.
Many Chinese parents are eager to hire native English speaking tutors for their children, so there is also scope for picking up extra private teaching work.
Conditions of Work
It is becoming increasingly common for schools to offer a job to an applicant but not guarantee employment until they arrive at the school. This is the result of foreigners having abused the system in the past, accepting numerous jobs in order to keep their options open.
Many schools have also introduced a probationary period for teachers of anywhere from two to ten weeks. This may sound a bit daunting if you have already paid for flights, but it can work in the applicant’s favor, as it allows time to ensure that the school is suitable for you. It is always best, whenever possible, to visit a school before signing a contract and talk to other foreign teachers to make sure that the school is everything it says it is.
Most foreign teachers are expected to teach between 15 to 20 hours a week, which sounds like a light load until you find out that there may be 50-100 students in each class. Often there is a heavy load of grading and report writing and you may be expected to staff English Clubs or assist with the school’s promotional events.
Terms run from early September to early July, with a 3 or 4 week holiday over Chinese New Year and the spring festival in January/February.
If you are considering working in the private sector, try to find out the degree of professionalism of the company you are considering, and talk to other teachers that are working there. Most recruitment of teachers by business and industry takes place locally, since they do not offer accommodation. Expect to earn USD $1,500-$2,000 per month for a 45 hour week!

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time earning my TEFL certificate with and have met some fantastic people who I hope to keep in touch with for the rest of my life. The staff in Jane, Damian, Michaella, Cello and the others were fantastic people who deserve all the credit for being so patient, helpful and fun to be around. I can honestly say, hand on heart, the only thing that could have been improved is that it could have lasted longer so I could have savoured and enjoyed the experience for just one more week...Thank you all so, so much"
"I don't have anything but positive feedback for my experience with the course and my work done at King's [Job Placement]. I thought the TEFL Training was excellent. And I think the way King's has taken us in, trained us, and provided superb life support has been brilliant. Thank you very much"
"My experiences in Thailand have inspired me to apply to become a qualified teacher in the UK, and the overall experience has expanded my horizons and given me numerous happy memories, and I made some enduring friendships as well. In fact, I am already planning my next trip to Thailand - it has been said to me on many occasions that people rarely come to Thailand just once, and I would definitely agree with that. Making the decision to go away is a big one, but it is one you will never, ever regret."
"As I began my search for an English program in Asia, I stumbled across a variety of courses. You struck me as the most compelling program for several reasons. First, the program's flexibility is attractive. You offer a variety of certification locations to obtain the TEFL/TESOL, along with various teaching locations upon completion of the program. Secondly, a job guarantee provides me with a sense of security. I can feel comfortable traveling to a new country and not worry about searching for work. Lastly, everyone I contacted who completed the program had nothing but great things to say about it. I was assured to hear that everything from the program organizers, down to the accommodations throughout the certification process and the actual TESOL training was as advertised."
“I truly had a blast during the [TEFL] course! There was a good, solid mix of in-class instruction, preparing for lessons, actual teaching, discussion, and of course FUN! I met wonderful people. Although the course was intense, the laid-back atmosphere provided a relaxed, enjoyable environment in which to learn. I don't really want to leave!”
"You have consistently responded to my many email queries and requests in good time. As an accounting practitioner running my own business for the past 14 years, I fundamentally understand the value of good service, and especially good response time. I have been impressed with Lisa's commitment, professionalism and non-pushy assistance."
"Hi Lisa. Just thought I would drop you a quick email to tell you how much I am enjoying the TEFL course on Phuket Island. The people are really welcoming, friendly and so helpful. Ian is amazing, and the hotel that he owns is a luxury to return to each evening after a long day at the language school. I am also meeting great people and the others on the course are wonderful. After the course is complete would you be able to help me in finding a school to then teach English in as this would be great. I am now in the second week and loving everyday out here in Thailand. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
"I'm glad I have chosen you' as the avenue for this as the course package is obviously thorough, well structured and professional. There is a welcome depth of experience evident and considerable support for course attendees. I was particularly drawn to the chance to take part in some formal Thai language lessons and to take part in hands- on teaching practice- so much more relevant than a course conducted in cyberspace!"
"All going really great hear here, have only 5 days left and the month has went by so quickly, have really enjoyed the program and must say Mr Sambo and the team here have made me feel very welcome and part of a family here. I must credit the organisation and support given to techers at all times, will miss the team when I leave here. I would definitely recommend any volunteer to come to this school and teach. Living in the volunteers house was also a blast, was great to have the other teachers support and advice whenever needed and the house is really nice. Overall I have really enjoyed my whole TEFL experience, from my week in Koh Samui to my placement here in Cambodia and I reckon I could be doing more teaching in S.E Asia in the future."
